What is the UN Security Council sanctions list and how do you check it?
In short
The UN Security Council keeps one consolidated list of people and entities under its sanctions.
Member states must apply the measures, such as asset freezes and travel bans, through their own laws.
You check it by comparing your contacts with the list, together with the national lists that apply to you.
What the list contains
The list covers individuals and entities subject to measures decided by the Security Council committees, for example on terrorism, North Korea and several conflicts.
Each entry shows names, aliases, nationality, identifiers and the committee that listed it.
Who must check it
The UN list matters for:
- Companies in any UN member state, through the national laws that apply the measures.
- Banks and payment providers that screen international transfers.
- Exporters, shipping and logistics companies that deal with high risk regions.

Frequently asked questions
Is the UN list legally binding on my company?
It binds states. Your company has to follow it through the law of the country that applies it, for example EU regulations or UK law.
What penalties apply to UN sanctions?
The penalties are those of the national law that applies the measures. For the EU and the United Kingdom, this page shows the figures we verified.
Do I still need the UN list if I check the EU list?
The EU list includes the UN measures applied in the EU, but checking the UN list too helps when you work with countries outside the EU.
The program can make mistakes. The final responsibility for compliance stays with your company. Unicorn Intelligence is an information tool. Decisions and legal obligations, including sanctions compliance, due diligence and tender participation, remain with the customer.
