In short

  • Competitors and startups leave public signals: funding rounds, product launches, job postings, patents and pricing changes.
  • Following them by hand takes hours and is easy to drop when work gets busy.
  • Unicorn Intelligence collects these signals for the companies and sectors you choose and sends a briefing every Monday, with alerts on important events.
  • Every item has its source and date, and the briefing is written in your language.
  • It is an information tool: conclusions and decisions remain with your team.

Most strategy and product teams agree that knowing what competitors do is useful. Few have the time to do it consistently. The result is a slide prepared once a year and a lot of surprises in between.

This article lists the signals worth following, explains how to read them and shows how to receive them every week.

Signals worth following

SignalWhat it can tell you
Funding rounds and reported valuationsWho has new money to spend, and how investors see the market
New products and announcementsWhere competitors are going and which customers they target
Job postingsWhere a company is investing: new countries, new teams, new technologies
PatentsWhich technologies a company wants to protect
Pricing page changesNew plans, new prices, new packaging

None of these signals is conclusive alone. Together, followed over time, they show a direction.

Why startups deserve attention

Established competitors are easy to name. Startups are harder: they appear quickly, raise money and can change a market segment within a few years. Following sectors, not only named companies, helps you see them early.

Unicorn Intelligence uses funding rounds and reported valuations from Unicorn Watch, a database of private companies by Unicorn Private, so that new players in your sectors appear in your briefing.

A startup that raises a large round in your sector, hires a sales team in your country or files patents close to your products is worth knowing about early, whether it becomes a competitor, a partner or an acquisition target.

Who uses it

  • Strategy and corporate development, to follow the market and spot partners or targets.
  • Product, to see what competitors launch and how they price it.
  • Marketing and sales, to prepare answers when a customer mentions a competitor.
  • Management, to receive one short briefing instead of many forwarded links.

Building a good watch list

Start small and precise. A useful watch list usually contains:

  • the direct competitors your sales team meets most often;
  • two or three adjacent companies that could enter your market;
  • the sectors where new startups are likely to appear;
  • key partners or customers whose moves affect your plans.

Review the list every quarter. Remove companies that no longer matter and add the new names that appeared in your briefings.

How it works

  1. Sign in with your business email or a Google or Apple account: $50 of free usage to get started, no card required.
  2. Add the competitors you want to follow and the sectors you want to watch.
  3. Choose the language of the briefing and how you want alerts.
  4. Every Monday read the briefing: each item with its source and date.
  5. Receive alerts when something important happens, by email or by signed webhook, and use the API to send items to your own tools.

Reading the signals with care

Public signals are partial. A job posting may never be filled, a reported valuation may come from a single source, a pricing page may be tested on some visitors only. That is why every item shows where it comes from and when, so your team can judge its weight.

Look for patterns rather than single events: a funding round followed by hiring in a new country and a new pricing page says more than any of the three alone.

Unicorn Intelligence is an information tool: conclusions and business decisions remain with your team.

Turning signals into decisions

A briefing is useful only if someone acts on it. Some simple habits help:

  • share the Monday briefing with the people who own pricing, product and sales;
  • keep a short note of the signals that confirm or contradict your strategy;
  • bring the strongest signals to your regular planning meetings, with their sources.

Over a few months these notes become a record of how your market moved, built from dated and sourced items rather than memory.

What it costs

With pay as you go each competitor you follow costs $300 per month, charged every week, with no monthly fee. The Sector plan covers 10 competitors and 3 sectors, and it is also part of the Market and growth package and the Complete package. The current prices are on the pricing page.
